ALYAS - AMO Lectures for Young Asia Scholars

ALYAS is a series of lectures designed and run by the AMO - Association for International Affairs for selected university students and young professionals with an interest in Asia affairs. The main objective of ALYAS is to deepen the understanding of political, economic, security and social issues of the Asia-Pacific region.

There are three key elements that make ALYAS an unique experience:

  • Participants can directly interact with foreign and Czech experts and practitioners with extensive knowledge of Asia in a small group setting. Therefore, we devote the same amount of time to lectures and Q&A sessions (45 minutes per each part).
  • Focus is on the current issues of the region which will play important role in Asia’s future prospects.
  • ALYAS serves as a platform for networking for young professionals who wish to tie their future career to Asia and who serve (or will later serve) in civil service, business, non-profit sector or academia.

The previous speakers included senior diplomats from British Foreign Service, the European External Action Service in Brussels, Asian ambassadors and renowned Asia experts from think tanks and universities in the United Kingdom, United States, Belgium, India, Sweden, Czech Republic etc.

Schedule

ALYAS is run every year from October to February on the model of evening school and it consists of 8 lectures. The first meeting is scheduled on 15 October 2015.

Lectures take place every other Thursday from 6 PM to 7.30 PM at Anglo-American University (Letenska 5, 118 00 Prague). Every session comprises a 45-minute lecture given by a high-profile speaker and a 45-minute discussion with Q&A.

The last lecture is followed by a ceremonial reception attended by Czech and foreign diplomats.

Structure

Participants of the course are provided with study materials (chapters of relevant books, academic articles, policy papers, audio- and video-materials, etc.) for each session. They are expected to actively participate and attend regularly.

As the outcome of ALYAS, the participants submit a final paper in English on a topic of their choice. During the classes, they will have a chance to share and discuss their ideas for the paper with their peers.

Successful participants receive AMO Young Asia Scholar Certificate. If needed, AMO can also provide a personalized letter of recommendation.

Fee for ALYAS class 2015/2016 is 1 800,- CZK.
